On listening
More and more, I think a true sign of expertise is less about one’s ability to speak than it is about his or her ability to listen. Speech is certainly an indicator of knowledge - but the point is that it starts with the listening.
Someone who has mastered the material about isn’t running through a script in their head when others are speaking; instead, they are fully attentive to what is being said. And someone who has a deep understanding of the material isn’t afraid to go off-script and engage in a dialogue that addresses the tangents or questions that were raised.
What do you think?
